Fresh Produce
We are proud to be one of the few farms in the area that grows a good part of the fresh produce that we sell in our market. "In season" produce is picked fresh every day.
Our growing season starts in the spring with fresh homegrown asparagus, rhubarb and snow peas. The season then moves to strawberries. They are ready around the first of June and weather permitting, they will be with us until the first of July. If we are really, really lucky with the weather the season's may overlap a bit and we'll be able to have fresh strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and corn all in the same day. It happened in 2008 and we can only hope for it to happen again in 2009. Let's keep our fingers crossed!
July brings lots of fresh produce to our tables. As the season progresses we have a much larger variety in our market. We have delicious home grown sweet corn, raspberries, blueberries, tomatoes, zucchini, pickles, cucumbers, green beans, several varieties of peppers, eggplant, greens, and cabbage. Not to mention the delicious, seasonal Michigan fruit that we carry. As we move into the cooler months we have homegrown winter squash available.
Some produce has a short season and our unpredictable weather has much to do with availability and quality. Don't wait too long to get what you need or you could miss it completely. You can call us or email us any time to check what's in the peak of the season. Or, you can sign up for our newsletter to keep informed.
Over the years we have recieved many questions as to the best practices of food preservation. We are happy to be able to provide you with links to the National Center for Home Food Preservation! The NCHFP is the ultimate source for all of your preservation questions. You will notice that techniques for preservation have changed over the decades in order to insure you and your family's health. We strongly encourage you to take a look at their site before you begin your preservation process this year!
